Becoming matters more…
Many people are hesitant to make commitments—especially public, long-term ones. We’ve all made resolutions and failed. We’ve set goals, exerted ourselves, fallen short of the set target, and believed a narrative that we therefore have “nothing to show” for it. It hurts. The feeling we fell short of the proverbial mountain top can lead to a chronic and debilitating psychological ache when framed incorrectly. Zig Ziglar says,
“What we become in pursuing our goals is far more important than what we receive in reaching our goals”
Are you, like me, a goal-oriented individual who has often been discouraged by missing a target? I am learning that while goals are important, they are a means to the end of growth and not the end itself. So even if we do fall short, we grow in the process! My life’s purpose is to love God and others by growing and helping others grow. Writing is a powerful medium to help others grow—so I need to hone that skill!
Therefore, I’ve committed to write five days a week encouraging, growth-oriented material, 30 minutes a day for the next 365 days. I’m going public with this commitment because I have learned the importance of accountability in my life and public commitment is a real motivator for me!
What about you? What commitment in your life, if you actually made it a habit, would have the biggest impact in your life?
